TMC alleges attempted attack on Mamata Banerjee

Published 13 October 2026

Trinamool Congress leaders alleged that a woman tried to attack former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee outside her Kalighat residence on October 13, and said she was caught and handed over to police. Banerjee was not reported injured. The allegations have not been independently confirmed in the available accounts, and no police statement was provided. Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen said in a complaint to Kalighat police that the woman approached Banerjee with a knife at about 6 p.m. Sen’s complaint described the woman as a civic police volunteer and said she claimed to be Banerjee’s niece. It also alleged that she was acting violently and raised the possibility of a wider conspiracy. The conspiracy claim was an allegation in the complaint, not an established finding. Party leaders said workers and security personnel apprehended the woman and took her to Kalighat police station. Sen reportedly lodged her complaint at about 7 p.m. Another TMC leader, Kunal Ghosh, offered a different description of the alleged physical contact, saying the woman tried to hit Banerjee on the foot. A separate account said she attempted to punch Banerjee and pulled at her saree.
