Three teenagers die after car enters River Wear

Published 1 October 2026

Three teenagers died after a car entered the River Wear in Sunderland on September 29, and the 17-year-old who survived was released on bail on October 1 after being arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, Northumbria Police said. Police have not established who was driving when the car went into the water, and their investigation continues. The teenagers were identified as Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, both 16. Police said the car came off the road at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge before entering the river. The surviving passenger reached safety and suffered injuries described by police as non-serious. Northumbria Police said the teenager was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The force confirmed on October 1 that he had been released on bail pending further enquiries. The arrest is an allegation, and police have not said who was driving the car at the time of the crash. The investigation is focused on the circumstances that led to the vehicle entering the water. Police have appealed for witnesses and are particularly seeking CCTV or dashcam footage.
