The Lowdown Season 2 Opens With a Prison Mystery

Published 15 October 2026

The second season of The Lowdown premiered on October 14 with two episodes on FX and Hulu, opening a new investigation for Ethan Hawke’s Lee Raybon and renewing the show’s focus on his complicated family life. The eight-episode season is scheduled to release new episodes weekly through November 25. In the opening episodes, public defender Ginger, played by Betty Gilpin, asks Lee to look into the apparent disappearance of her former client Mekko Dean from prison. Ginger says she has been unable to reach him, and a prison visit raises further questions when officials present a different man as Mekko. Lee begins pursuing the case, which draws him into danger. The episode coverage depicts Lee witnessing prison guard McMann, played by Shane McRae, kill Chili, played by Paul Schneider. Chili had driven Lee to McMann’s location after the two spent time together. The killing signals the risks of Lee’s investigation, though the available episode accounts describe fictional events rather than independently verified real-world incidents. The mystery begins after Lee receives an award for his reporting on the Dale Washberg case from the first season.
