Tesla Adds Home Backup to Eligible Model 3 and Model Y

Published 8 October 2026

Tesla has expanded its Powershare Home Backup feature to eligible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, allowing them to supply electricity to a home during an outage when paired with specified Tesla equipment. The capability was previously available among Tesla vehicles only on the Cybertruck, according to Tesla’s announcement and updated materials. The company says Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered on or after October 1, 2026, are eligible, while some vehicles ordered earlier may also have the required capability. Tesla says the feature is available in the United States and Puerto Rico. Owners can check a vehicle’s software information screen for Powershare Support, according to Tesla’s guidance. Unlike the Cybertruck setup described by Tesla, the Model 3 and Model Y system requires a Powerwall 3 home battery and a compatible Tesla Wall Connector. Tesla says the vehicles use a bidirectional power-conversion component called PCS2 Lite. The company has not specified in the supplied materials when the hardware began appearing across individual trims, leaving the eligibility of some earlier vehicles dependent on their equipment.
