Starknet Poll Seeks Support for Independent Layer 1 Research
Starknet has opened a seven-day, nonbinding poll asking holders of its STRK token whether the network should research becoming an independent, quantum-resistant Layer 1 blockchain. The vote does not authorize a departure from Ethereum, where Starknet currently operates as a Layer 2 network. The poll opened October 15 and is scheduled to close October 22, with results expected afterward. Holders can support further research, oppose it or remain neutral. A supportive result would advance study of the proposal; any eventual transition would require additional proposals and governance votes. Starknet has announced no migration timetable. StarkWare, the company behind Starknet, says an independent network could pursue quantum-resistant security without relying on Ethereum’s upgrade schedule. It points to Starknet’s dependence on Ethereum-linked infrastructure, including its bridge and data availability, as areas with remaining quantum-security dependencies. Those concerns are the company’s stated rationale for exploring a separate Layer 1.
