SpaceX Agrees to Testify at NYC AI Safety Hearing

Published 13 October 2026

SpaceX has agreed to testify before the New York City Council’s Committee on Technology on Friday, October 16, after missing an earlier subpoenaed hearing and facing a threatened request for judicial enforcement. The company is scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. ET, the council said Tuesday. Council Speaker Julie Menin said SpaceX agreed to testify two days after the council told the company it intended to ask a judge to enforce the subpoena. The council has not identified who SpaceX will send. The hearing is scheduled; its outcome and any commitments by the company are not yet known. The dispute followed a September 28 subpoena requiring Elon Musk or another senior SpaceX representative to testify at an October 5 hearing on artificial intelligence safety. SpaceX did not attend that session, which also heard from representatives of Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta. The council later warned it would seek judicial enforcement, according to its statements. The council’s inquiry is assessing whether risks from artificial intelligence warrant new legislation.
