SpaceX Agrees to Acquire Nationwide 800 MHz Spectrum
SpaceX has agreed to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide portfolio of 800 MHz spectrum licenses, a move the company says could help its Starlink Mobile service compete as a major U.S. wireless carrier. The agreement, announced October 8, covers up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum and requires approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Financial terms were not disclosed. SpaceX says the low-band frequencies would complement its existing global 2 GHz mid-band spectrum and satellite network. Lower-frequency signals can travel farther and pass through obstacles such as walls more effectively, while the 2 GHz spectrum is intended to provide capacity. SpaceX has described the acquisition as addressing a technical gap in its plans for mobile service. The company says it would combine satellite connectivity with a terrestrial network using the spectrum. That proposed system is not yet established as a nationwide service: the deal still needs FCC approval, and network deployment would be required. The announcement does not establish that Starlink Mobile will offer uninterrupted coverage, particular speeds, lower prices or immediate availability.
