Shah vows UCC in all 21 NDA states before 2029

Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Sunday that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government will implement the Uniform Civil Code in all 21 states under its rule before the 2029 general elections. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Shah expressed confidence in the timeline, noting that the code has already been introduced in several states. The Uniform Civil Code proposes a common set of personal laws for all citizens, covering matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, irrespective of religion. Its stated aim is to ensure equality before the law and promote national integration by replacing religion-based personal laws with a uniform legal framework. Uttarakhand became the first state to pass a UCC law in February 2024, which came into force in January 2025. Gujarat followed, and Assam became the first northeastern state to pass a UCC bill in May 2026. Madhya Pradesh's cabinet also unanimously approved the code. However, the bills in Gujarat, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh are awaiting presidential assent and official notification to become law.
