Serbia Calls Snap Elections Amid Protests

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has called for snap parliamentary elections to be held on October 25. The vote, which was not originally scheduled until December 2027, follows nearly two years of student-led protests that have challenged his rule. The demonstrations gained momentum after the November 2024 collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad, an incident that killed 16 people and fueled widespread accusations of official corruption and negligence. In a televised address, Vucic stated that the country needed election results to clearly reflect the will of the people and determine its direction. The Serbian Progressive Party, led by Vucic, has nominated him to head its electoral list and pursue the prime ministership. Vucic also reiterated claims of significant foreign involvement in the unrest, alleging that foreign powers were involved in stirring up disorder, though he did not identify specific actors or provide evidence. Student groups involved in the protests are reportedly preparing their own parliamentary electoral list, which is seen by some observers as the main challenge to Vucic's long-standing dominance.
