Tamil Nadu By-Elections Set to Test New Government

By-elections for two Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, Madurantakam and Dharapuram, have been scheduled for October 6, 2026, marking a significant electoral test for the three-month-old government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The Election Commission of India announced the polling date, with votes to be counted on October 9. These seats became vacant following the resignation of their sitting AIADMK legislators, who subsequently joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party. The upcoming contests are expected to be three-cornered, as the main opposition party, the DMK, has announced its decision to field candidates, setting aside earlier speculation of a potential understanding with the AIADMK. The AIADMK has also confirmed it will contest the by-elections. The Election Commission's schedule includes the issuance of the election notification on September 9, with the last date for filing nominations set for September 16. Scrutiny of nominations will occur on September 17, and candidates can withdraw their papers until September 19. The Model Code of Conduct is now in effect in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies.
