Rwanda Reportedly Reaches Deal for 2030 F1 Grand Prix

Published 7 October 2026

Rwanda is reported to have reached an agreement to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2030, a move that could bring the championship back to Africa for the first time since 1993. Formula 1 has not confirmed the reported agreement, and the race remains a prospect rather than an officially announced calendar event. The reports describe plans for a new permanent circuit near Bugesera International Airport, about 40 kilometres from Kigali. The proposed venue has not been established as built or ready to host a race. The available information does not confirm whether it has received the approvals required for a Grand Prix. The reported agreement follows Rwanda’s public effort to attract Formula 1. President Paul Kagame announced the country’s intention to bid in 2024. The bid initially faced questions because Rwanda did not have a circuit capable of hosting a major motorsport event, but the proposal has continued to develop around plans for a purpose-built facility. If the race proceeds, it would be Africa’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. Rwanda would also make its debut as a host on the championship calendar.
