Rayo Vallecano match abandoned after objects thrown again

Published 11 October 2026

The referee abandoned Rayo Vallecano’s LaLiga match against Athletic Club after home supporters threw paper planes and rubber balls onto the pitch for a second time, with the score 0-0. The interruption came during the first half of the clubs’ first league-season match at Estadio de Vallecas, following protests against Rayo president Raúl Martín Presa. The disruption began around the 13th minute, when supporters chanted for Presa to leave and threw objects onto the field. The referee stopped play for about 15 minutes as stadium staff cleared the debris and an announcement urged spectators to remain calm. After play resumed, objects were thrown again, and the referee called off the match. LaLiga said a new date and time for the fixture would be announced shortly. Athletic Club said it had been told the match would not be played later on Saturday or on Sunday, and that it would contact supporters who had travelled about refunds. The available information did not provide a rescheduled date or details of completed refund arrangements. The protest took place amid anger over Rayo’s management and stadium conditions.
