Pritzker and Goodell meet on Bears stadium plans
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker met Thursday with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Bears minority owner Pat Ryan and three Illinois lawmakers to discuss the team’s stadium plans, as state officials seek to keep the franchise in Illinois. Pritzker’s office described the meeting as productive and said its focus was keeping the Bears in the state while protecting taxpayers. The statements did not identify an agreement or specific outcome. The meeting brought Goodell together with Pritzker, Illinois House Speaker Emanuel Chris Welch, state Rep. Kam Buckner and state Sen. Bill Cunningham. Pritzker’s office said it had remained in conversations with the Bears about their Illinois plans throughout the summer. The NFL said it appreciated the opportunity to meet with Pritzker and legislative leaders, adding that timely action was essential as the Bears work toward a long-term stadium solution. The league’s statement did not specify what action it sought or describe any commitments made during the meeting. The Bears have publicly focused on Indiana for a new stadium, but have not announced a final site or decision. Hammond is among the locations under consideration.
