Steelers Finalizing Trade of Joey Porter Jr. to Cowboys

Published 1 October 2026

The Pittsburgh Steelers are finalizing a trade sending cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys, with reported compensation including a 2028 second-round draft pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick. NFL reporter Tom Pelissero reported the deal; accounts differ on whether the sixth-round selection is conditional. The supplied reports do not include an official team or league transaction record confirming completion or final terms. The move follows stalled contract-extension talks between Pittsburgh and Porter, who is in the final year of his rookie contract. Steelers coach Mike McCarthy said in August that the organization and Porter’s representatives had reached an impasse. The Steelers had set a negotiating deadline before the season and did not reach an agreement by then, according to the reports. Porter has not played for Pittsburgh this season and missed the team’s first three games. Reports have cited a back injury and changes to his injury-report status, alongside the contract dispute, but do not establish how much each factor contributed to his absence.
