Porsche Sets Electric-Only Boxster and Cayman for 2028

Published 7 October 2026

Porsche said its next-generation Boxster and Cayman will be sold only as electric vehicles, with 2028 set as the first full year of production. The decision, presented during the company’s Capital Markets Day on October 7, ends uncertainty over whether combustion-engine versions would return alongside the battery-powered sports cars. The company’s strategy presentation listed the 718 models as electric-only. Reports described the cars as expected to be revealed or arrive in 2027, but Porsche’s stated production milestone is 2028. The available information does not establish a more specific production or customer-delivery date. Porsche’s head of corporate communications, Matthias Rauter, said the combustion-engine 718 models had never been confirmed for a comeback. That clarification addresses earlier expectations that gasoline engines might be offered in higher-performance versions. The next Boxster and Cayman are based on a new electric setup, and final powertrain details have not been announced. Porsche has provided some information about the battery layout.
