Police seek mother after newborn found on Bangor shoreline

Published 1 October 2026

North Wales Police said a newborn girl whose body was found on the Menai Strait shoreline in Bangor may have been in the water for up to a few weeks, according to preliminary indications from a postmortem examination. Further tests are underway, and the circumstances of the baby’s death remain unknown. A member of the public reported finding the body on Sunday, September 27. Police said the postmortem confirmed the baby was a girl. The force has not said where she entered the water or how she died, and the possible time in the water has not been established as a final finding. Police said they are keeping an open mind about where the baby entered the water and are consulting oceanographers about currents. House-to-house enquiries are continuing near the discovery site, and officers are pursuing other enquiries as they seek to identify the baby’s mother. The force said it received calls from members of the public after appealing for the mother to come forward. At the time of its update, those enquiries had not identified her. Superintendent Llinos Davies urged the woman to contact police and said officers’ priority was her safety and welfare.
