Pioneering British rapper Sway Dasafo dies at 44

Sway Dasafo, the pioneering British rapper who made history as the first unsigned artist to win a MOBO Award, has died at the age of 44. His death was confirmed on September 18, 2026, by the MOBO Awards and close friends, with a friend telling the BBC he died at his home in Ghana. No cause of death has been provided. Born Derek Andrew Safo on September 5, 1982, in Hornsey, north London, to Ghanaian parents, Sway was celebrated for his versatile lyrical style and for championing British music. His career breakthrough came in 2005 when he won the MOBO Award for Best Hip Hop Act while still an unsigned artist, defeating established American rappers 50 Cent and The Game. The MOBO Awards described the win as "a huge moment" for UK hip hop, stating it "made a real statement about the talent, creativity and potential coming out of the UK." Sway released his debut album, "This Is My Demo," in 2006 through his own Dcypha Productions label. The album, featuring the single "Little Derek," earned a Mercury Prize nomination.
