Nintendo Has No Current Plans to Drop Physical Games

Published 12 October 2026

Nintendo has no current plans to stop releasing physical games, Bill van Zyll, the company’s vice president and general manager for Latin America, said in an interview, adding that Nintendo considers consumer preferences and that its Switch 2 supports both physical and digital games. Van Zyll made the remarks in an interview with YouTube creator Coelho no Japão. He described Nintendo’s approach as responsive to what consumers prefer and said the Switch 2 was just over a year into its life. His statement addresses the company’s present plans; it does not establish a long-term commitment to physical releases. The comments come as game companies and players debate the future of physical media. Sony has announced plans to stop producing discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028. Nintendo’s executive did not announce a change to the company’s format policy, and his remarks focused on the Switch 2, which accommodates both formats. Physical releases on the console include conventional cartridges that contain game data and GameKey Cards that require a download. The latter still provide a physical card, but do not store the full game on it.
