Marblehead High football captain Owen Coyne dies at 17
Owen Coyne, a 17-year-old senior and football captain at Marblehead High School, died after a sudden brain hemorrhage, his mother said. Marblehead Public Schools canceled the team’s scheduled game against Danvers and said it would provide counseling support to students and staff. Coyne’s mother, Angela Paradise, said doctors told the family he died because of an anomaly in his brain. She said the family did not believe the hemorrhage was caused by an impact. The reports provide no independent medical finding or further details about the cause. Paradise said Coyne began experiencing severe headaches after Marblehead’s first game of the season on September 10 and spent two weeks in the hospital before his death. The timing of the headaches does not establish a connection to football, and his family has said it did not link his death to a hit during a game. Coyne was a senior wide receiver and safety and one of the team’s captains. He also played baseball and competed in track and field. He had committed to play football at Williams College after graduating, according to reports about his family and school career.
