Mariota ruled out with knee injury as Commanders turn to rookie

Published 4 October 2026

The Washington Commanders ruled quarterback Marcus Mariota out for the remainder of their Week 4 game against the Indianapolis Colts after he left with a knee injury, turning to rookie Athan Kaliakmanis. Coach Dan Quinn said Mariota had reinjured his right MCL, but there was no timetable for his return. Mariota was starting in place of Jayden Daniels, who is recovering from a dislocated elbow. He left the game after being hit while attempting a pass, and was initially listed as questionable to return. Reports differ on whether the ruling came at halftime or shortly afterward, but agree he did not return. Kaliakmanis, a seventh-round rookie, took over at quarterback. Washington trailed 10-6 at halftime. In the third quarter, Kaliakmanis connected with Treylon Burks for a 47-yard touchdown, according to one game account. The available reports do not establish the full game result. Mariota had started the previous week as well, leading Washington to a win over Seattle. Against Indianapolis, he completed three of four passes for 46 yards and ran for 35 yards before leaving, according to game coverage.
