Mamdani Mourns October 7 Victims, Condemns Israel’s Gaza Campaign

Published 7 October 2026

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked the third anniversary of the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks with a statement mourning those killed and abducted in Israel while accusing Israel of carrying out an ongoing genocide in Gaza. His remarks combined condolences to grieving New Yorkers with criticism of Israel’s military campaign and U.S. support for it. Mamdani’s statement said Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 people. He said the attacks caused profound pain for New Yorkers and that he grieved with those still affected by the loss. He also described Israel’s actions in Gaza as an ongoing genocide, a characterization in his statement rather than a finding independently established by the material provided. The mayor’s statement attributed more than 74,000 Palestinian deaths, including more than 21,000 children, to Israel’s campaign. It also said more than 1,400 Palestinians had been killed since what it called a ceasefire. Those figures were presented as Mamdani’s claims; the reporting available here did not provide underlying records or counting methods to verify them.
