Netanyahu says Hamas will not govern Gaza

Published 6 October 2026

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a memorial ceremony in Jerusalem on October 5 that Hamas would not govern Gaza and that Israel still had missions to complete, three years after the October 7, 2023, attacks. His pledge did not specify an alternative arrangement for governing the territory. Netanyahu spoke at a state ceremony at Mount Herzl, where Israeli leaders commemorated those killed in the attacks and the subsequent war. He said Israel had achieved significant results but had more tasks ahead. He also vowed to continue pursuing people involved in the attack or in holding hostages, according to accounts of his remarks. President Isaac Herzog reflected on the losses and upheaval of the past three years, including bereavement, injuries, displacement and uncertainty. He praised acts of solidarity among Israelis and called for the stories of those killed to be remembered. Herzog also honored surveillance soldiers at the Nahal Oz outpost, who, he said, reported the approaching attack before it reached them. In remarks reported at the ceremony, Netanyahu said Israel would continue striking Hezbollah in Lebanon and seek an opportunity for peace with Lebanon.
