Katy Marchant retires after 13 years in cycling

Katy Marchant has retired from cycling after 13 years with the Great Britain programme, ending her career as a reigning Olympic team-sprint champion. The 33-year-old won Olympic gold with Emma Finucane and Sophie Capewell at Paris 2024, where the trio secured Britain’s first Olympic title in the women’s event. Marchant also won silver for England in the team sprint at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, her final major competition. Marchant said she no longer wanted to make the choices required to pursue another Olympic campaign at Los Angeles 2028. She described the decision as settled, while saying she was proud of her achievements and wanted to end her career on her own terms. Reports of her comments indicate she had considered continuing, but did not want to commit to the training and preparation needed for another two years at the top level. Her retirement closes a career that began when she joined the Great Britain programme in 2013. She made her Olympic debut at Rio 2016 and won bronze in the individual sprint. At Tokyo 2020, she competed in the keirin, but a crash ended her campaign.
