Judge Clears Former FEMA CFO Mary Comans’s Name

Published 14 October 2026

A federal judge on October 13 formally cleared former Federal Emergency Management Agency finance chief Mary Comans’s name, ruling that accusations about her conduct were objectively and demonstrably false. The decision followed a name-clearing hearing in which the government did not contest the proposed facts presented on her behalf. U.S. Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick’s order addressed public allegations made after Comans was fired in February 2025. Elon Musk had posted her photograph on X alongside a claim that she committed a crime by directing millions of dollars to New York City migrant housing. Fitzpatrick found the post false and said Musk knew or should have known that his subordinates had approved the disputed payments. The judge said the photograph’s publication to Musk’s large audience was intended to make Comans afraid and described the conduct as little more than state-sanctioned intimidation. The ruling was part of civil name-clearing proceedings, not a criminal trial or conviction.
