Imran Khan Detained, Released at Mumbai Protest
Actor Imran Khan was detained by Mumbai police during demonstrations on October 10 supporting the Cockroach Janata Party’s protest, then released, according to reports. More than 400 demonstrators were detained across the city, with at least 200 taken into custody earlier at August Kranti Maidan, according to the reports. The detentions took place as police moved to prevent gatherings that had not been authorised. Khan had joined the demonstration at August Kranti Maidan in support of the party’s protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Before police took him away, he said he was participating as a private citizen, had no demands and did not represent an organisation. He also questioned restrictions on movement and public expression. From a police vehicle, he later posted that he was going for a drive. Lekha Washington and Zayn Marie Khan were also reported detained at the protest. Earlier that day, police detained at least 200 people at August Kranti Maidan, including members of activist Tushar Gandhi’s organisation, Hum Bharat Ke Log, and supporters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
