Rahul Gandhi backs protests after Delhi detentions

Published 10 October 2026

Rahul Gandhi urged young people to continue protesting against the government, saying the opposition would defend the Constitution and seek to defeat those he accused of attacking it. His remarks followed a demonstration in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, where police detained protesters and several political leaders, according to reports. In a video shared on social media on October 10, Gandhi said he had been confronting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for more than a decade. He called on young people to keep protesting and said the opposition would protect the public’s voice and prevent what he described as harm to India from being repeated. His assertions about the government and its opponents were political claims. The protest was organised by Citizens for Judicial Progress, or CJP, at Jantar Mantar. It called for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Delhi Police said permission had not been granted and prohibitory orders were in force in the New Delhi area.
