Google tests firmware update for older Home and Nest speakers

Published 15 October 2026

Google is testing firmware version 3.79.550760 for four older smart speakers, with planned improvements to audio, Wi-Fi connectivity, setup, voice-assistant access, smart-home controls and stability. The update is available through the company’s Home Preview Program, and a broader release has been expected in the coming weeks, with no specific date given. The devices included in the test are the original Google Home, Home Mini, Nest Mini and Nest Audio. Google’s release notes describe the update as addressing audio and media streaming, volume, setup and Wi-Fi connectivity, the Google Assistant entry experience, smart-home controls, and overall performance and stability. The firmware is being tested rather than confirmed as generally available. Owners who are eligible can enroll in the Preview Program through the Google Home app. The sources describe the update as installing automatically, but do not confirm that the listed changes have reached users outside the testing program. Google has not detailed the practical effects of the changes.
