Google Says ChromeOS Updates Will Continue Through 2034

Google says ChromeOS devices will receive regular updates and security patches through mid-2034, while some qualifying Chromebooks may be able to migrate to Googlebook OS. The company has not identified which models will qualify, and its published support terms do not establish that all Chromebooks will lose support in 2026. In a support document, Google said existing Chromebooks will continue receiving updates for the remainder of their supported lifetimes. Enterprise and Education management capabilities will also remain available on those devices during that period. The mid-2034 date refers to ChromeOS updates and security patches, not a single expiration date for every Chromebook. Google said qualifying devices bought today whose ten-year support lifecycles extend beyond mid-2034 will have a transition path to Googlebook OS, the operating system for Google’s upcoming Googlebook computers. The company has not published a model-by-model eligibility list. It later clarified that its reference to migration concerned newer commercial Chromebook models, according to reporting on the statement.
