General Mills removes artificial dyes from U.S. cereals

Published 27 August 2026

General Mills announced on Wednesday that it has eliminated artificial colors from all of its U.S. cereals, including popular brands like Lucky Charms and Trix, marking a significant shift in the American food industry. The Minneapolis-based company said it has transitioned to using dyes derived from fruits, vegetables, and natural spices such as paprika and turmeric to maintain the vibrant hues of its products. The company confirmed that 90 percent of its U.S. retail portfolio is now free of artificial dyes. Products that still contain synthetic colors, including some Betty Crocker cake mixes and Fruit Roll-Ups, are scheduled to transition to natural alternatives by the end of 2027.
