Gavaskar wants Rohit to outscore his age in ODI hundreds
Sunil Gavaskar said he hopes Rohit Sharma will finish his career with more one-day international centuries than his age, after Sharma was dismissed for 92 in India’s third ODI against the West Indies. Gavaskar said Sharma might retire after the 2027 World Cup, but Sharma has not confirmed that plan. Sharma fell eight runs short of a century in the match on October 3, 2026, and India lost. He has scored 35 ODI hundreds. Gavaskar said the missed opportunity mattered because a century would have been Sharma’s 36th and moved him closer to the personal milestone Gavaskar wants him to reach by retirement. Speaking on a JioStar broadcast, Gavaskar said he was disappointed Sharma did not convert the innings into a hundred. He described having more ODI centuries than one’s age at retirement as a marker of a long career and sustained performance. Gavaskar also recalled that he had wanted to score as many Test centuries as his age when he retired at 38, but was dismissed in the 90s three times. Gavaskar’s remarks about a possible retirement after the 2027 World Cup were framed as speculation, not a confirmed decision.
