Rohit sets fastest mark for 10,000 ODI runs as opener

Published 3 October 2026

Rohit Sharma reached 10,000 one-day international runs as an opener during India’s third ODI against West Indies on October 3, setting a new mark for the fewest innings needed to reach the milestone. Match reports said he achieved the total in 202 innings, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s previous benchmark of 214. Rohit needed two runs to reach the mark and completed it with a flick for two off Jayden Seales on the third delivery of India’s innings, according to match accounts. The achievement made him the fourth batter to score 10,000 ODI runs as an opener, joining Tendulkar, Chris Gayle and Sanath Jayasuriya. Tendulkar set the previous fastest mark against Australia in Brisbane in 2004. Rohit reached the same total 12 innings sooner. The record concerns runs scored while opening the batting, rather than a batter’s overall ODI career total. Rohit went on to score 92 in the third ODI, falling short of a century. Reports said he faced 85 balls and hit 10 fours and three sixes. The milestone came early in the innings, before the remainder of his knock. It followed another milestone in the second ODI against West Indies.
