Fisherman bitten twice in shark encounter near Malibu

Published 5 October 2026

A fisherman in a kayak was bitten twice during an encounter with a shark near Paradise Cove in Malibu on Sunday morning, then helped from the water and taken to a hospital, according to lifeguards and reports. The man’s condition and the severity of his injuries have not been established in the available information. Lifeguard Alex Buford said the fisherman had hooked a shark while fishing and brought it onto his kayak. The animal bit him, Buford said, and after the fisherman released it, it returned, knocked him into the water and bit him again. The detailed sequence is based on Buford’s account; video described in reports shows a rescue but does not clearly show the shark or independently establish the bites. A nearby fisherman helped the injured man out of the water and toward shore, according to Buford and other accounts. Reports said the man’s girlfriend, a retired lifeguard, also helped him after he reached shore and contacted emergency responders. The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded, and the man was transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. The encounter was reported near Paradise Cove at different approximate times. Buford put it at about 7:30 a.
