Fiji appoint Jake White to lead 2027 World Cup campaign

Published 13 October 2026

The Fiji Rugby Union has appointed Jake White as head coach for Fiji’s 2027 men’s Rugby World Cup campaign, replacing interim coach Senirusi Seruvakula. White, who led South Africa to the 2007 World Cup title, will take charge of the Flying Fijians through the tournament in Australia. The appointment followed an earlier period of uncertainty over the vacancy. Reports published before the announcement said Warren Gatland was considered a leading candidate, citing an account attributed to the Fiji Sun. Those reports also said White remained in contention. The later appointment reports confirmed White’s selection, but did not independently establish how the candidate discussions unfolded. Seruvakula took over on an interim basis and oversaw Fiji’s midyear Tests and the 2026 Pacific Nations Cup, according to the appointment coverage. He had succeeded Mick Byrne, who left the role in April 2026. Fiji advertised the permanent position in August, seeking a coach to lead the men’s team through the 2027 World Cup and help it become a consistent competitor among leading nations. White brings international and club coaching experience.
