FA suspends six-week ban for Southampton coach Eckert

Published 7 October 2026

The Football Association has imposed a six-week ban on Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert for misconduct connected to the club’s observation of opponents’ training sessions, but suspended the punishment until the end of the 2027-28 season. The FA also fined him £28,000, leaving him free to continue managing the Championship side for now. The decision follows an investigation into Southampton’s conduct during the previous season. The club admitted that staff observed training sessions involving Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough. The English Football League had already expelled Southampton from the Championship play-offs and deducted four points from the club for the current campaign. Eckert admitted sending staff to monitor opponents’ training, according to accounts of the proceedings, but said he did not know the practice breached EFL rules. The EFL commission found that junior staff felt pressured to carry out the work and described the plan as directed from senior levels. The FA’s sanction applies to all football and football-related activity, but its suspension means Eckert can remain in his role unless the penalty is activated.
