ESPN Coaching Jason Kelce on Eagles Pronoun Habit
ESPN producer Jeff Dufine says the network has been trying to coach Jason Kelce out of referring to the Philadelphia Eagles as “we,” a habit that drew renewed attention during Kelce’s commentary on the Eagles-Jacksonville Jaguars game in London on October 11. Dufine described the pronoun issue as a common transition for former players and coaches moving into broadcasting. He also praised Kelce’s ability to read the game, saying his advice was to explain what he sees and trust the production team to support him. The coaching account comes from Dufine’s description of the network’s approach; no change to Kelce’s commentary style has been reported. Kelce, who spent all 13 of his NFL seasons with Philadelphia, had used “we” for the Eagles during a September 28 halftime broadcast. The habit resurfaced in discussion around the London game, where the Eagles lost 19-17 after Jaguars kicker Cam Little made a 57-yard field goal as time expired. The broadcast also prompted online criticism and praise. Some viewers complained that Kelce spoke too often and left fellow analyst Kurt Warner with limited room to contribute.
