Conflicting Death Tolls After Zamfara Convoy Ambush
A convoy of traders travelling under military escort was ambushed in Zamfara state, Nigeria, on Saturday, with reports giving conflicting death tolls of at least 20 and 13. The accounts agree that security personnel and civilians were among those killed, but the available reporting does not establish a single confirmed total. The convoy was travelling from Gwashi toward a market in Bukkuyum district when armed men attacked it. Reuters-based accounts said the traders were heading to Nasarawa market and put the death toll at at least 20: four soldiers, three police officers, one Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps officer and 12 civilians. An unnamed military source said 19 people were wounded. Local accounts cited by AFP reported 13 people killed: eight soldiers, one police officer and four traders. Those accounts said 11 people, including three soldiers, were injured and taken to hospital. They also said attackers looted goods and burned three vehicles. The difference in the reported tolls remains unresolved in the available accounts. The attack was one of two reported in Nigeria over the weekend.
