Celtic beat Motherwell to end losing streak and top league

Published 11 October 2026

Celtic beat Motherwell 2-0 at Fir Park on October 11, ending a three-game losing streak and returning to the top of the William Hill Premiership. Goals from Camilo Durán and Benjamin Nygren secured the victory, which also gave manager Martin O’Neill his 250th win in charge, according to the match coverage. Durán scored early to give Celtic the lead, and the visitors controlled much of the match. Nygren added the second in the 58th minute, despite a strong performance from Motherwell goalkeeper Alex Paulsen. The result moved Celtic back ahead of Rangers, who had taken the summit on Saturday, and left Celtic with seven wins from eight league matches this season. The victory ended a run of three consecutive defeats across competitions that had preceded the international break. Celtic had lost twice to Rangers and once to Ferencvaros. The break had also brought uncertainty about O’Neill’s future and renewed tension between some supporters and the club’s board, as described in match coverage. During the game, some Celtic supporters displayed banners and chanted against major shareholder Dermot Desmond. A notable moment for Celtic was Jota’s return to action after a long absence.
