Brady warns Cook carries could fall after fumbles

Published 14 October 2026

Buffalo Bills coach Joe Brady said James Cook could face reduced carries if his fumbles continue, while expressing confidence in the running back after the team’s overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams. Cook has fumbled four times through Buffalo’s first five games, including twice in the 37-34 victory over the Rams. He has gained 532 rushing yards over that span. Brady said Cook’s ball security must improve, warning that turnovers can cost games and that consequences may follow if the problem persists. Brady also emphasized Cook’s value as a runner and said he put him back into the game after the fumbles because he trusts him. He said the team’s discussions with Cook about the issue are ongoing. His comments described a possible consequence, not a decision that Buffalo has already reduced Cook’s workload. The Rams game included a fumble by Cook in overtime. Buffalo went on to block a potential game-winning field goal and then kick one of its own, securing the victory. Brady said winning did not make the turnovers acceptable, adding that the mistakes had nearly cost the team the game. Cook had six fumbles last season.
