Bongi Mbonambi awaits Sharks disciplinary ruling

Published 12 October 2026

South African hooker Bongi Mbonambi is awaiting a disciplinary ruling from the Sharks over alleged misconduct at a preseason team-building camp, leaving his status with the club unresolved. Reports published October 11 and 12 said a decision was expected within two weeks; no finding or sanction had been announced by October 12. The case concerns alleged conduct during a camp in August. Reports say coach JP Pietersen had permitted players to socialise on one evening before returning to training, but that Mbonambi and other players allegedly continued into the following morning. The Sharks have not publicly detailed the allegations or the hearing’s findings. Mbonambi has not played for the Sharks in the opening three rounds of the United Rugby Championship and, according to reports, is not training with the squad despite being fit enough to play. Asked about his absence, Pietersen said there was no comment on Mbonambi. The Sharks also declined to comment, saying the disciplinary process was ongoing. Reports say hookers Fez Mbatha and Eduan Swart received written warnings following their own disciplinary proceedings.
