Bluesky Applies for .bsky Domain Suffix
Bluesky has applied to create the .bsky internet domain suffix, a move that could let users replace longer account handles with shorter addresses if the application is approved. CEO Toni Schneider said the review by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is expected to take 18 to 24 months. The application remains pending, and Bluesky has not determined how any .bsky names would be allocated. The proposed suffix could allow a handle such as sarahp.bsky.social to become sarahp.bsky. The examples describe a possible future use, not a service currently available to users. Bluesky says it has no current plans to sell or monetize the names. The company’s application was among those ICANN published on October 7 as part of its latest round for new top-level domains. ICANN, a nonprofit organization that coordinates the internet’s domain name system, published 1,615 applications from 481 applicants, according to the reported figures. Each application must go through the organization’s review process; no decision on Bluesky’s request has been announced.
