Apple HomeView will not be sold in the EU for now
Apple says its HomeView smart-home display will not be available for sale in the European Union because the Siri AI it relies on is currently unavailable on iOS there. The company says it is working with EU regulators to find a way forward but has not given a timeline for sales in the region. Apple announced HomeView on October 13, opening preorders and scheduling shipments to begin November 13. The product combines a display with smart-home controls, video calls, music and family photos. Its EU exclusion applies to the device itself, rather than only to selected software functions. The company’s stated reason is that HomeView relies on Siri AI, which Apple says is currently unavailable in iOS in the EU. The company’s announcement does not specify when that restriction might change or whether HomeView will eventually be offered there. The issue is linked in reporting to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which sets requirements for major technology companies designated as gatekeepers. Apple has argued that interoperability requirements could compromise user privacy by requiring access to parts of its ecosystem.
