Anthropic warns government views could disrupt business
Anthropic’s initial public offering prospectus warns that government attitudes toward the artificial intelligence company and its technology could damage relationships with commercial customers and partners, as well as disrupt its government business. The filing says the company could face material revenue losses or business interruptions from government actions, even though contracts with government agencies account for less than 1% of its annual revenue. The prospectus, which was not included in the material reviewed for this article, was reported on by Reuters after its reporters reviewed the document. Its disclosures describe a risk that government actions or perceptions could affect commercial ties beyond the direct impact of losing public-sector contracts. Anthropic warns that similar measures in the future could harm its reputation among customers, partners, employees and investors, regardless of their ultimate outcome. The filing cites several interactions with the U.S. government over the past year. It says the president ordered federal agencies in February to stop using Anthropic’s models, and that the Defense Department designated the company a supply-chain risk.
