AI drug shows potential aging marker effect

An artificial intelligence-designed drug, rentosertib, has shown potential to not only improve lung function in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) but also to reverse biological markers of aging, according to new study findings. The drug, developed by Insilico Medicine, was created using AI platforms from target identification to molecular design in approximately 18 months. Results from a Phase 2a clinical trial, published in Nature Biotechnology, analyzed blood samples from 42 patients with IPF. These samples were assessed using six independent "aging clocks," which measure biological age based on protein levels in the blood. All six clocks indicated that patients treated with rentosertib showed a reduction in their predicted biological age, while those receiving a placebo did not. The effect was most pronounced around four weeks into the treatment, with some clocks suggesting a reversal of up to six years. Researchers caution that it remains unclear whether these observed shifts reflect true anti-aging effects or are simply a consequence of improved lung health, as IPF is a disease that accelerates aging-like processes.
