Google Cathay Pacific expand AI contrail trials
Google and Cathay Pacific Airways are expanding trials of an artificial intelligence-powered technology designed to reduce the climate warming effects of aircraft contrails. The initiative uses AI to predict and help pilots avoid atmospheric conditions that lead to the formation of persistent contrails, which trap heat in the atmosphere. Contrails, the visible white condensation trails left by aircraft at high altitudes, are estimated to account for roughly one-third of aviation's total climate impact. These trails form when aircraft fly through cold, humid air. While many contrails dissipate quickly, some can persist for hours, acting like clouds that trap heat. The expanded trials build on earlier efforts, including an initial test conducted in late 2025 involving over 80 Cathay Pacific flights. This pilot program reportedly achieved an estimated 40 percent reduction in the warming impact of contrails, with the Hong Kong to Singapore route alone contributing significantly to the reduction. Google has also conducted previous trials, including one with American Airlines in the U.S. that found a 54 percent reduction in contrail generation.
