49ers’ Purdy sack-free through three games

Published 3 October 2026

The San Francisco 49ers have opened the 2026 season with three wins, and quarterback Brock Purdy has not been sacked on any of his 83 pass attempts. The team’s sack-free start will be tested against the Denver Broncos in Week 4, a game scheduled for Sunday, October 4. Purdy has thrown nine touchdown passes and recorded a 133.1 passer rating through the first three games, according to statistics reported in coverage of the team. The 49ers are the fourth team since 1990 reported to have allowed no sacks through three games, joining the 2014 Cincinnati Bengals and Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts teams in 1999 and 2005. San Francisco’s protection has involved more than its offensive line. Coach Kyle Shanahan said the line, tight ends, running backs and sometimes receivers have contributed with blocks and chip help. He also credited Purdy with getting rid of the ball when protection breaks down and said receivers have helped by getting open quickly. Purdy has also been able to benefit from the team playing with a lead in each of its first three games, which can reduce the need to pass in obvious long-yardage situations.
