Xi Jinping to visit Washington for Trump summit in September

Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the United States from September 23 to 25, 2026, at the invitation of President Donald Trump, with a summit at the White House on September 24 that both sides hope will extend a trade truce expiring in November. The visit marks the first time a Chinese president has visited the White House in more than 11 years. According to plans described in reporting on the trip, Trump intends to greet Xi personally at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, September 23, followed by an official welcoming ceremony at the White House, a military parade in the Rose Garden, and a closed-door meeting between the two leaders on September 24. A formal dinner for the Chinese delegation is planned for Thursday evening in the East Room. The central economic deliverable is the Busan trade truce, struck last year and set to expire in November 2026. Both sides are reportedly pushing to extend it. Preliminary talks between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, held in New York on Sunday, reportedly focused on trade in nonsensitive products and limited artificial intelligence guardrails.
