Woman rescued after 20 hours in Ionian Sea

Published 14 October 2026

A 44-year-old woman from El Salvador was rescued conscious after spending about 20 hours in the Ionian Sea following an overboard incident from the cruise ship Odyssey of the Seas, the Greek coastguard said. The woman was found early Saturday in a life ring by a vessel taking part in the search and was recovered by a Greek coastguard patrol boat. The coastguard said she was given first aid and taken to hospital in Pyrgos after being brought ashore at Katakolo. A local prosecutor ordered medical examinations, including a psychiatric evaluation, according to the coastguard. Officials have not released details of her condition beyond saying she was conscious when found. The incident occurred early Friday while Odyssey of the Seas was sailing southwest of Zakynthos, a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. The coastguard said the woman later told rescuers that she had jumped because she wanted to disembark. That explanation was relayed by a coastguard spokesperson; authorities have not publicly provided further details about the circumstances.
