One body recovered as search continues off Lewis

Published 14 October 2026

A fishing vessel carrying three men was reported missing off Port of Ness on the Isle of Lewis, and one body has been recovered as searches continue for the boat and two men, Police Scotland said Wednesday. Police said the vessel was reported missing at about 11:35 p.m. Tuesday, October 13. The recovered man has not been formally identified. Police said the men’s next of kin had been informed and were receiving support from officers. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the search involved an aircraft, two helicopters, six coastguard rescue teams, two Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeboats, a local vessel and Police Scotland. Extensive searches were ongoing on Wednesday, authorities said. HM Coastguard said it was alerted at about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, before Police Scotland received its report. The accounts describe different notification times to the two agencies. A yellow wind warning issued by the Met Office covered the Western Isles and other parts of northwest Scotland on Wednesday. The warning was in force from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Reports gave forecast gusts of up to 60 mph in the area in one account and up to 70 mph in others.
