Houston Hiker Sahil Jilani Found Dead at Abrams Falls

Published 13 October 2026

Sahil Jilani, a 24-year-old Houston man who went missing while visiting Great Smoky Mountains National Park, was found dead in the water at Abrams Falls, his family said. The cause of death had not been officially released as of October 12, and his family said it believes he drowned after being caught in strong currents. Park officials said Jilani was last seen at Riverstone Campground in Townsend at about 8 p.m. on October 5. His vehicle was found at the Abrams Falls trailhead two days later, according to the park. His family said dive teams recovered his body from the water on October 8. The family also said his phone, keys and clothing were found nearby. Jilani’s sister, Asma Jilani Bustamante, said their mother was hospitalized after learning of his death. The family has described the loss in public statements and urged visitors to take warnings about natural water hazards seriously. The National Park Service strongly discourages swimming at Abrams Falls, citing slippery rocks and a deadly undertow. The park also warns visitors about the risks around waterfalls and riverbanks.
