Simon and Rachel bring deaths and flooding to Mexico
Storms linked to Hurricane Simon and the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel caused deaths, flooding and damage in Mexico, while Simon remained offshore on Monday, bringing rain and prompting warnings of further flooding and mudslides. In Guerrero state, a 71-year-old man died in Chilpancingo when a wall collapsed during heavy rain associated with Simon, Governor Evelyn Salgado said. The storm also brought down trees and power poles, blocked roads and flooded homes in coastal communities, including Acapulco, she said. In Baja California, authorities updated their reports of deaths and missing people connected to Rachel as rescue and recovery work continued. Officials initially reported one death and 10 people missing. Later, state officials said four bodies had been recovered in Ensenada and six people remained missing: four there and two from San Felipe. The figures were preliminary, and authorities had not provided a final toll in the reports. The Mexican military used helicopters to rescue 32 people from a ranch in Ensenada, according to state officials. Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila said 13 of those rescued were youths.
